Both Teams to Score (BTTS): What It Means

Both teams to score, usually shortened to BTTS, is settled on one fact: did the home team score, and did the away team score? The winner of the match does not matter. A 1-1 draw wins. A 3-0 home win loses, because the away team did not score.

How Both Teams to Score Works

Bookmakers price two outcomes, Yes and No. Yes wins when the full-time score has at least one goal for each side. Own goals count for the team they are credited to on the scoresheet. Extra time is not included unless the market says so. A match that finishes 2-1 after a 0-0 first half is still a winning BTTS Yes bet.

BTTS is not the same market as over 1.5 goals or over 2.5 goals. Over 1.5 can win 2-0. Over 2.5 can win 3-0. BTTS Yes loses both of those. Over 2.5 can also lose a 1-1, which is a winning BTTS Yes. The two markets overlap often and still fail in different matches, so a short price in one does not tell you the price in the other.

Why Both Teams to Score Matters for Betting

The useful comparison is the price against the chance you assign to both sides scoring, not against a goals line you happen to like. A team that creates chances and a team that concedes them can still produce 1-0 and 2-0 if one attack is blunt. League tables of BTTS rate are a starting point for that, because some leagues really do produce more matches where both sides score.

How OddAlerts Uses Both Teams to Score

Upcoming matches with a BTTS angle are listed on the BTTS trends page. League scoring patterns, including BTTS, are covered in the best leagues guide. The trends tool guide explains how to rank teams by a stat rather than by the last result.

FAQ

Does BTTS mean over 2.5 goals?

No. Over 2.5 goals needs three or more goals in any combination. BTTS needs each team to score at least once, which a 1-1 covers and a 3-0 does not.

Does a 1-0 with an own goal win BTTS?

An own goal is a goal for the opposing team. If that is the only goal, the score is 1-0 and only one team has scored, so BTTS Yes loses.

Related Terms

BTTS sits next to expected goals, which describes chance quality rather than whether both teams actually scored, and value, which is the comparison between your chance and the price.
